Why doesn't my resource allocation update when I enter actuals?

My schedule is Fixed Duration and I have assigned resources at 75% which
defaults the estimated work to 6 hours per day. I've baselined. Now I want
to enter the actual Start and Finish dates and the actual hours worked and
have Project calculate what the actual allocation to the task was. Here is
an example:

Task Name : 1 day duration : John assigned at 100% : estimated work 8 hours.

1. I enter the start and finish dates which show John actually took 2 days
to do this task.
2. I enter the actual work he reported which was 8 hours

Expected outcome: the resource allocation (100%) will adjust to 50%.

Actual outcome: the resource allocation will not change and I must choose
between reporting the work accurately (8 hrs) and letting MSProject assign an
incorrect duration (1 day) or I may enter the actual duration (2 days) and
let Project assign an incorrect actual work (16 hours).

I tried resetting the Type to Fixed Work, but still got the same result. I
also tried setting the Type to Fixed Units, but still got the same result.

Is there a setting somewhere that I don't know about that is fixing the
resource allocations?

Are you entering Start and Finish dates or Actual Start and Actual
Finish? They are two separate sets of fields. To enter in the
actuals, the easiesty place to do it is in the Tracking Table of the
Gantt Chart view.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply. Yes I am entering the actuals in the actuals fields
and I am using Gantt view and the Update Tasks tracking icon to enter the
actual information.
