Why doesn't One Note allow typing input or menu use?

I just downloaded a 60-day trial version of One Note, because I've heard
about it and wanted to try it out to see if I liked it. But I can't type into
it, and none of my files will open into it. I've looked at the help and the
microsoft online help page, but I am unable to do what it says to fix the
problem. It tells me to add files by selecting add file from a drop-down
menu, but nearly all options in the menus are unusable (gray/inaccessible).

Help! How do I get One Note to work?!

Apart from the problem:
If you want to see what you can do with OneNote, you'd better do that
with the new ON 2007 version.
It's available for download on the MS Office 2007 Beta site (a nominal
fee of $ 1.50).

Did you activate the trial? If you haven't, you won't be able to use it to
take notes. :)
