why doesn't the connects function list all connections?

When using VBA alongside Visio I need to count the number of other shapes a
shape is connected to using the Shape(index).Connects.Count statement. This
works for some shapes however on others it returns zero even when the shape
is clearly connected to 3 other shapes. Can anyone tell me what i'm doing
wrong?
