Office 2000 has been discontinued from mainstream support. That is the reason why

The reason it doesn't support it is that Office 2000 mainline support has
ended and it is currently on Extended support. That will be the fate of any
of the other Office products as well as soon as they reach the end of their
mainline support.

Extended support for Office 2000 will end 7/14/2009.

See this page for all of the various dates and what that means:

Oh, and by the way - It isn't just VISTA that doesn't support Office 2000 in
the Office Updates, it isn't supported in XP or previous either now because
the mainline support has ended.

And, for all other Office products (those with mainline support still in
place) MICROSOFT UPDATE is really the place to get them instead of Office
Update (even though Office Update will work for those somewhat).
