Why don't the connector sites appear (i.e. the blue circles)

I am trying to use connector autoshapes. But, the connector sites don't
appear (i.e. the blue circles) over the autoshape "flowchart" objects. Why
is this?

Connectors are only active when you're in the Drawing Canvas. To enable
the Drawing Canvas, click on Tools | Options | General | check the
"Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes" box | OK.

You can also explicitly create a drawing canvas using Insert | Picture | New
Drawing.
