Why Excel cells print as dots/pixels when using shade option?

Excel 2000 - All of a sudden, after formatting cells in shades of gray by
using the toolbar shading icon option, the printed version shows the shaded
cells as dots/pixels only and not complete gray. Why is this happening? It
has never happened before in any of my other worksheets.
