Why graphic opens in browser?

PP2003. This isn't making my life difficult, I am merely puzzled.
If I hyperlink something in a presentation to a jpeg outside it (in the same
folder so I don't get the doom-and-disaster warning), why does it open in my
browser rather than in the graphics editor that the file association table
shows?

Thank you Steve for your swift reply. It's an answer I can live with, and
I'll experiment with the other formats for the exercise. :)
