why has outlook suddenly grayed out menu options, e.g new message

Outlook (office 2003) was working fine until a couple of hours ago. I
emailed myself a photo I had taken on my mobile phone by MMS, and copied it
to adobe album from my inbox, then started writing a message to my son to
send him the photo. At this point, outlook didn't allow me to write
anything, copy the photo into the message or anything. I could put the
cursor on the page, but couldn't enter text or paste the picture. I closed
the window, but then the options in the menu for creating new message,
creating new anything, were grayed-out and so was the button. Also grayed
out are many other menu items, including "options" and "customise".

(Note that adobe photo album tried to register itself, but our security
programme blocked it, so I cancelled the registration temporarily)

It does let me delete messages. I am receiving messages. And the account
settings have been checked and a test message was sent Ok from that window.
I have tried closing and reopening Outlook, tried restarting computer, tried
restoring settings - computer said no settings had changed - run out of ideas
- HELP!
