Why has Word 2003 stopped opening documents

Suddenly I cannot open a document from Word 2003. If I click on the "Open"
icon, I get the Dialog box, but the pull down to seelct outside "My
Documents" just freezes it. Other software (Notepad or my own) can use this
Dialog, so the problem seems to be in Word

In Windows XP, right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows
desktop or in the Start menu, left-click on Disconnect Network Drive,
and disconnect any mapped drives that are not currently available.
