Why images are opening in Internet Explorer?

I have a hyperlink to the image on the hard drive. When I click this
link, image is opening in Internet Explorer not in my default picture
viewer?
Why?

Clearly your 'default' viewer for this type of image is not what you believe
it to be, and in any case it is not a Word issue.
