No, it isn't a virus. You have the display of nonprinting characters
turned on. If it's just spaces (that is, you don't also see arrows for
tabs, and ¶ for end-of-paragraph marks, and other things), then you
can go to Tools > Options > View and uncheck the box for Spaces. If
you do see all the marks, just click the ¶ button on the toolbar to
turn them off.
