why is microsoft word crashing when i open a file?

I just bought a new HP pavilion computer. Rather than use the trial of
Office, I installed the version of 03 office I had. Now every time I open
word or try to type or save or print or do anything, it crashes. Any ideas?

Yes, I did actually. that's what was giving me probs, my own registered CD.
It's strange! Thanks for the help!

In fact, I'm not sure what to do. I don't even have to touch the program and
it crashes when it opens! I tried following some of those things on the list
but they don't seem to be helping. What's worse is this is a brand new
computer!

Does Word open without problems when you use the /a switch?

It opens then crashes still. I dunno what's going on.

You can also open in Office Safe Mode by holding down Ctrl while starting
Word.
