I cannot get word to open properly and some of my word documents will not
show up as text.
Well, why does it take half a second to one second between a click on the
volume control icon in the system tray, till the volume control shows up?
Why does Windows Explorer hang when it's asked to display a folder with one
or more too large video files, and in general, why doesn't anything work?
Current answer: it's Microsoft.
Earlier it was: it's IBM (or some such).
Simply put, when an organization grows too large the make-believe that makes
or breaks careers gains significance (internally in the organization) to the
point where it all but removes any hint of what the reality is. For an
organization like Microsoft that just means low quality software and nearly
all channels of reality-based feedback turned off at some point. For some
other organizations it sometimes means that people die or suffer greatly.
Hence the solution to your problem should, ideally, be to use a word
processor and/or OS from a much smaller company, or an open-source one.
So why don't I do that? Because there's an effective monopoly in place,
which among other things impacts my ability to exchange documents with
others, give or receive help, find or buy relevant tools, and so on. So the
in-practice solution is to reinstall:
* Try [Help -> Detect and Repair...] in Word, as a limited reinstallation.
* If that doesn't help, try to fully deinstall and then reinstall Office.
* If that doesn't help, back up all your data and reinstall Windows.
The first option shows that Microsoft, at some (probably engineering) level,
is aware of the quality problem...
Of course, with more details about your problem it might be that all you
really need to do is to repair some file association (try "Open With" in
Explorer) or some such -- but you don't describe the problem in detail.
