Why is MS Office Enterprice 2007 configuring every time I start a.

I have a PC running Windows Vista, and have installed the MS Office
Enterprice 2007 package. Every time I start Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
the Windows Installer opens and starts configuring MS Office Enterprice 2007,
before the program opens. How can I avoid this?

Thank you for the information. I used the tool and deleted all of the
Microsoft office stuff then re-loaded Office Enterprise 2007. It worked until
I re-booted now I have the same issue as before and that the other person
has. Every time I start Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint the Windows
Installer opens and starts configuring MS Office Enterprice 2007. Any
suggestions?

You probably have a problem with incorrect file access permissions.

I say "probably" because Microsoft has not - to my knowledge - actually
acknowledged a problem. It may not even be Microsoft's problem to solve.
However, if you search the web for information about your situation, you
will likely find that incorrect file access permissions was the underlying
cause in most cases, and that the problem occurs with certain Microsoft
products that use the Windows Installer. To date I have seen this same
problem with different versions of Office 2007 and the .Net Framework.

The solution is to reset your file access permissions to their default
values. To get a little more technical, it means resetting the access
control lists (ACLs) in large parts of the Windows registry. Since editing
the registry is risky, I suggest a safer way to do this: You start by
installing the SubInAcl tool from Microsoft's website and then run a batch
file (typically called reset.cmd) to reset the permissions for you.

You can find detailed instructions with a web search - use this as your
search term: subinacl reset.cmd

It's completely safe to reset your file access permissions, so long as you
follow the instructions carefully. You are not making any changes that will
interfere with other software; you are merely resetting the permissions to
their default values. Once this is done, I believe Office 2007 will no
longer reinstall itself every time you start an Office application.

Thank you for the reply. I downloaded the app and ran the reset.cmd as
administrator. I took a while and finished with 4 errors and some 70k
successes. I re-booted and still have the issue. Any other suggestions? Maybe
one of the errors I received is linked to Office 2007, it did not say.

Some tips for this procedure:

1. You need to run the reset (i.e., reset.cmd) from the account which is
experiencing the problem.
2. Resetting requires elevated permissions, so the account from which you
are running the reset must be an Administrator. (You can switch it to
Administrator and switch back to Limited afterward.)
3. You should probably disable your security software when resetting,
otherwise your changes may not be allowed or survive a restart.
4. Don't forget to restart your computer after resetting permissions.

The 'errors' you are receiving likely refer to registry keys that won't
allow their permissions to be altered--typically these keys belong to your
security software, so you're glad they can't be altered in this way.

I don't know the exact procedures you used, so I can't offer any further
help.

You can include commands in reset.cmd that will output the results to a text
file. This way, you can search for errors that may or may not matter. You
should know that this will substantially increase the time needed for the
reset, and it will output a huge text file, in the vicinity of 500MB!

Thanks again for the response. Since this is my personal laptop and I am the
only one using it and I am the administrator I assume there is something else
wrong with this. I did run it again and still have the same issue.

I meant to tell you also that I disabled all of the security software prior
to running it and still had the issue after the re-boot.

Event Viewer may have information that will help. You can use event IDs and
snippets of the event description as search terms.

Thanks again...

This is where I am at right now. I uninstalled Office 2007 then ran the
msicuu2 program to clean up all of the install files. I rebooted the computer
and re-loaded Office 2007. Right now the configuring/install window issue has
gone away. I have uninstalled then reinstalled before and it worked but for
some reason after a SP or two is installed it comes back.
