Why is my product key called invalid?

On my new computer, the office WORD has expired. I bought a new "Microsoft
Works Suite 2004" and installed it on the computer. When I enter the
product key from the package, the program says that it is invalid. I have
tried several times, checking to be sure that the number is identicle to the
one on the package, and I get the same message. Help please!
