why is my reply button disabled in outlook 2007

I recently installed Outlook 2007 on XP SP2. Now when I select any email in
my inbox the reply button (and forward, reply all, customize, option, import
export) are disabled. How do I get them back? What happened? It worked this
morning but not now.
