Why is my word crashing all the time

D

I don't know what has happened, but my word has begun to crash VERY often,
sometimes every 10-15 seconds. I can't work with any of my files. I have
run detect and repair, I have uninstalled office and reinstalled it (and I
turned off system restore during the process). I don't know what could be
causing the problem. I haven't installed any new software or changed any
settings.

It could be a corrupted normal.dot template, which wouldn't be fixed
by uninstall/reinstall. Try the procedures at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm instead.

Does this work for office 2003? I forgot to mention that is what I'm using.
I looked at the information and checked my temp folders, but they were empty.

Yes, it all applies to Office 2003. Clearing the temp folder isn't the only
step there... continue with the rest of it, until the problem is solved.

I tried all the remedies listed in the URL. Nothing has helped. The
symptmom seemed to change. Before, I was getting crashes after about 15-30
seconds every time I used Microsoft Word 2000 (on Windows XP SP2). Now, I
get the same problem, but if I try to File->Open a file, and I navigate to My
Computer, Word crashes immediately. Otherwise, it will stop responding after
about 15 seconds or so. And that's how it crashes, I get the "(Not
Responding)" message in the title bar.

As I said, I tried all the remedies listed in the URL above, but nothing has
helped. including reinstalling Microsoft Office 2000. I am at a loss. Now I
don't have a Word Processor, which is pretty serious business for me.

Can you help at all in this or should I just break down and buy a new Word
Processor? I'd rather stay with WINWORD. I have used it siince 1986.

I tried opening my winword with the /a option and it still crashed. Can I
assume that I do not have a normal.dot template corruption?

Thanks,

Tim

Correct. Starting in Safe Mode (using the /a switch) bypasses all templates,
add-ins, registry settings, etc. and opens Word in its default install
condition.

The symptoms you describe could be caused by either a corrupt printer driver
or the Spelling and Grammar whilst you Type options. Disable Spelling and
Grammar checking and change the Language Settings to 'Do not check spelling
and Grammar', then test again. If it is OK with no proofing, then it is
probably a corruption in the Proofing Tools.

Ok. That seems to have helped. Now, how do I fix the underlying problem.
For a person with spelling as poor as mine I require the spell checker.

I guess I can do an after the fact spell checker, however I would prefer a
fully functioning product.

Thanks again for all of your help!

I would recommend uninstalling the proofing tools through the Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs, then deleting the proofing dlls from Windows. Then
reinstall the proofing Tools, through Add/Remove Programs. I'm not sure what
dll need deleting through.
