Why is screen text actually larger than printed text?

In Word 2003, text (Arial, Times New Roman, etc.) prints out smaller than
screen size. Also, in Print preview, if you hold an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet up to
viewing screen it is much smaller than document on screen when setting is at
100%. How come? Thanks. Montauklite

100% is actually relative. It will vary with screen resolution and monitor
size. It is not meant to be "actual size." Think of it more as "standard" or
"base size" and adjust the Zoom accordingly. My assumption is that 100% is
intended to be readable for most people, but you may find another Zoom ratio
that is more readable for you. Given the difference between screen and print
resolution, you may not be able to match "actual size" and keep the text
readable.
