why is the make mde option on my access db ghosted

I want to secure the db by converting to mde, but the option is ghoseted out.
This occurs even on a brand-new db, with a single table, no code, no added
references and no links to other databases.

What version of Access? If you're using Access 2002 or Access 2003, the
default database format is the Access 2000 format. However, Access 2002 or
Access 2003 is incapable of converting an Access 2000 format database into
an MDE. If that's the case, convert your database to the appropriate format
(using Tools | Database Utilities | Convert Database from the menu)

You can't have a DB open for that option to be accessable. Try it when you
first open Access and before you open a DB.

That's not true. The Make MDE File option is supposed to be run with the
database open.

Thanks Douglas - you gave me the clue to get it working. The options
available to me where to convert my database to 97 or 2002. I took a copy and
converted it to 2002 and then the Make MDE was available.

Thanks for that - you-re a star!
