Why is the photo I inserted all black?

In Word, I've tried to insert a photo from file (tried .tif and .jpeg). At
first, the photo appears fine. Later, after closing and reopening the file,
the area the photo should be in is solid black. Deleting and reinserting the
file still results in solid black.

Any suggestions?
