Why is there a delay when typing a new message?

When I am composing a new message, I am getting a 2-3 second delay after
about 30 characters are typed. The text on the screen freezes up, but it
eventually catches up after a few seconds. Is anyone else having this problem
or have any ideas about how to fix it?
