Why is typing so slow in Word 2007?

I have a new computer, with Office 2007 home edition on it. There is
significant lag when I type anything in Word, which is no good as I like to
write and tend to do huge volumes of word processing. Does anybody know how
to fix it? I am this close to getting out my old CD for Word 97.
