Why is Word 2003 defaulting new documents with no header or footer

Any new document I open in Word 2003 is not opening with no header or footer
- this has occurred randomly after months of opening with a header and
footer. I have tried a number of things but cannot resolve this annoying
behaviour. Any clues please?

thanks

I, too, am having the same frustrating problem, and, sorry Suzanne, yours is
not the solution. Any other ideas?

Hi Suzanne, thanks for your reply.

Yes, Headers and Footers work fine when I use the View | Header and Footer
command.

As I say, more of a frustration that things don't work as they used to.
Btw, I always work in Print Layout view and a new page does open in this view.

In that case, it sounds very much to me as if the "Show white space between
pages" setting is the culprit.

I agree. But as it has not been apparent until I have more than one page I
have probably switched the headers back on before I noticed. However, how do
I stop it happening, because the settings in Options|View has
'White space between pages' ticked?

Very many thanks for your attention to this, Suzanne. I've got plenty to
occupy myself with now. Not sure which solution is going to work, as at the
moment the intermittent problem isn't!
Your site is now bookmarked for the next time it re-appears. Thanks again.
