WHy is WORD 2003 suddenly refusing to open?

I am running Office 2003 on Vista Home 2006. It's been fine for the past
year, but two days ago Word refused to open when I clicked on a .doc file
attached to an e-mail. I just got the eternal spinning cursor. WHen I
opened Task Manager to close the Application, Word didn't show up as running.
I've tried opening in Safe Mode, but that doesn't work either.

In addition, Excel will open, but won't open any files. Eternal spinning
cursor again. I un-installed and re-installed Office and that didn't help.
What else can I do?

(The .doc file I was trying to open when the problem occurred opened fine on
another computer running Windows XP and WOrd 2007.)

One common denominator between Excel and Word is that they both rely on
seeing a compatible printer driver. Perhaps the driver is missing or
corrupt.

Anyway, take a look at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm

Terry - It sounds like the default printer issue is the most likely culprit.
The link you sent me to suggests checking the default printer by going to
settings under Start. Unfortunately I'm running Vista and there is no
setting tab under Start and I can't find any comparable tab to try and re-set
the default printer. ANy suggestions?

Strange because I have a PRINTER listed in the right-hand side of the Start
Menu! Another way to get to Printers in Vista is to go to Windows Explorer
(Winkey+E) and there should be a shortcut to the Control Panel in the Menu
bar: open the Control Panel and the Printer app should be listed. If that is
missing too, then call your Tech Support because they must have blocked user
rights.

Click on the "Orb" Right click on black area, Properties Customise
Scroll down and check Printerd. OK out
