Why is word slower

When working with word 2007 (and excel/powerpoint 2007) i have noticed that
when i am working with many photos embedded into my documetns, or charts in
my spreadsheets the programs run somewhat slowly. My system has a Core 2 duo
(2ghz process or a 256mb graphics card and 1gb 533mhz ram) so it isnt becuase
my system is underrated. These slow response times didnt occur in office 2003
or prior. Is it becuase there is debugging code still being used or is the
new program just bulkier and slower.

I regularily run defrags, disk cleanups, virusscans, etc weekly

Beta versions are not usually tuned for performance. I think you'll
find that the final release is no slower than Office 2003. Don't
expect it to be faster, though -- I don't think the rendering code has
changed much, if at all.
