Why MS Office 2007 is slow on my computer?

R

Ramin

I have a Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz with Hyper Thread Technology and 1 GB of PC 2700
MB/s DDR RAM but MS Office 2007, especially Outlook and Word, runs very
slowly on my computer. I think my computer specifications meets the minimum
requirement quite well. Why is it so slow?

M

Milly Staples - MVP Outlook

Because it is beta code with debugging and error reporting programs along
for the ride.

Did you bother to read the Beta Download caveats?

About Beta Software
a.. Registration is required for participation.
b.. 2007 Microsoft Office system Beta 2 is for evaluation and planning
purposes only.
c.. Beta software does not necessarily display the same high level of
stability of shipped Microsoft products.
d.. Beta testers may experience problems with 2007 Microsoft Office system
Beta 2 products that could potentially result in loss, corruption, or
destruction of existing data.
e.. This beta testing release is not appropriate for production use.
f.. It is strongly recommended that you back up your existing data before
you install and run this software.
g.. Beta code is offered "as is," and does not include technical support.
h.. Many organizations have policies prohibiting unauthorized software
installation on company-owned computers. Make sure you check with your IT
department before downloading and installing 2007 Microsoft Office system
Beta 2 on your computer at work.
If you didn't pay attention, please re-read the above information again, and
again, and again, until you understand what BETA software is and is not.

I am wondering as to why the reply from Milly Staples is avoiding an
appropriate answer to a specific question? It appears that "Reading the riot
act" nature of the answer seems to be bordering on arrogance!

M

Milly Staples - MVP Outlook

No, it is an appropriate answer to why the program runs slowly. Those of us
who have tested (officially - not like you) beta software expect the
slowness, weird errors, etc. What about pointing out that there is extra
code inserted into the beta for performance checking and error reporting
that slows performance did NOT answer the question?

If you are not prepared to accept the lack of production version
performance, do not run beta software. If you do run beta software and
expect production version performance, you need to re-read the caveat on the
beta download site.

Nothing to be done about folks who insist on running beta software in a
production environment without a fallback option (ghosted image, etc) except
to point out the errors of their ways.

Arrogance - no, consider it a spanking for a really bad, stupid user. I DO
believe in corporal punishment and think that our society suffers for the
lack of tolerance for it.

Hi Ramin,

Be sure to send your feedback on the Office 2007 performance directly to the MS Office product team using the feedback tool below.

Include in your feedback whether it's Office overall that feels sluggish (beta software is still in development and 'optimization'
is one of the last processes that occurs) or if you're finding specific features or steps to be slow to respond. Describe there
your version of Windows, whether you're logged in as an Admin, if you have mapped drives, if you're on a network, other add-ins,
software or utilities you run, etc.

Some performance areas MS may be aware of but specifics on certain functions or scenarios may be new or unexpected.

Thank you for your answers. Yes, the slowness should be from debugging codes.
Whenever I start the MS Word, it also takes about 30 seconds that the
antivirus to scan the empty MS Word document automatically.

P

Patrick Schmid

That 30 second delay is a different issue and not beta related. Do you
have any anti-virus scanner integrated into office?
If not, do you have any legacy add-ins (file extension .wll) in your
Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Startup folder?

Hey Milly,

My husband allowed me to download the beta on his system. It's beefy enough
and he only uses it for games. Not a big deal if we need to flatten it. I
still need to activate it but am having the usual connection issues (will
check out the archives tomorrow).

This is gonna get interesting now.

Big deal. Milly tests beta software. So what? I am a software
engineer/mechanical enineerg (write simulation and modelling software), and I
didn't think the initial question was stupid at all. I guess what Ramin
needs to know is that some Beta Software is better than others (I have a
bunch of Beta Software that runs without a hitch), and this is one case
where, from what I have heard, one needs to stay 10 feet away from your
computer while it is running Office Beta. Better wait until SP1 and maybe
SP2 come out after a few years for the stable Office. The answe to your
question Ramin....its because it is a shoddy Beta.

Paul, if you're so keen on such things, you might want to assure
yourself of the difference between "your" and "you're" before posting a

And ... just for the record ... I am frustrated by the slowness of
