Why MS Word or Excel gives error message and program shuts down

I have Win XP Pro and after I reinstalled MS Office 2000 several times and
still have same problem. Whenever I attempt to open MS Word or Excel I get
an error message overlaying the opening box identifying MS Word is opening
and then when clicking the error message Word or Excel closes. I have
deinstalled and reinstalled MS Office a half dozen times and still the same
problem. Outlook works fine however as does MS Publisher, Power Point gives
a different error message and does not work either. Everything was fine a
week ago before upgrading to XP Pro and doing the MS Office reinstallation.

Any ideas??
