why new container every line?

E

Edward Lee

I'm using OneNote on a Tablet PC. I'm using College Ruled Stationary. I find
it very inconvenient that ON treats every individual line as a separate
container. At a minimum, it would be nice if ON waited until I skipped a
line before starting a new container.

Is there any way around this?

thanks,
Edward Lee

Try going into Tools/Options and in the Display area, remove the check mark
from "Show note containers on pages."

On a related note... is there any way to get OneNote not to insert line
breaks when I write to the end of the width of a container and then have to
move to the next line? (it's rather annoying to have them there it I try to
resize the box or convert it to text.)

Thanks.

Edward, be sure to upgrade to the Sp1 release, which can handle
double-spaced notes (in OneNote, Help/Check for updates)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for responding. I made the change and it didn't seem to make a
difference. Here's an example of my problem:

I take a phone message that spans two lines. the first line contains the
caller name and company and the second line contains the phone number. After
writing the note, I flag it for follow-up. Now, when I run a notes summary,
all I get is the second line of text (i.e. phone number with no name). Not
very useful.

Thanks

Hi Chris,

I have SP1 . Is there a setting that I need to configure somewhere to get
this to work?

Thanks,

Did you try restarting OneNote after making the change? Maybe it is just a
fluke here, but that's the way it works for me.

From your other mail, it sounds like it is not the double-spacing, but
OneNote is not understanding that you want the two single-spaced lines to be
treated as one unit, correct? If so, you can right click (tap and hold) the
handle of the second line and choose "merge with previous" from the context
menu. You can also experiment with settings in tools/options/handwriting to
control how writing guides work.

Correct.

This worked, but obviously not an appealing option for every note I take.

I think I may be on to Something . I turned on the "show ink groups" option.
This helped me realize that the page was wider than my screen display. As
such, ON assumed that I was not writing to the end of the screen and thus
was starting a new line.

Is there a way that I can stop pages from automatically getting wider?

thanks,
Ed Lee

Edward,
Try File--> Page Setup. Then, change the page size from the default of
automatic to something smaller than your screen width. Does it then
recognize that you are writing to the edge of the page? You may not know it,
but the page setup can be changed on existing pages as well as when
inserting new ones.
(I've been playing with this option for another project and thought it might
help here.)
