Why "not a valid win32 application" opening doc files from icon?

I'm using Word2000 but I still can't open files direct from their icon, or
directly as word doc attached to emails. I've got a legit/ authentic Word
2000 program so I don't understand (my machine uses Windows XP).

Try re-registering Word. From Start, Run type in

winword /r

and press enter. Nothing will appear to happen but Word will have been
reregistered in Windows.
