Why not include option-delete functionalityin composition windows?

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: Exchange

Almost every other Mac app supports holding the option key and pressing the delete ("backspace" key on many keyboards) key to delete the entire word, back to the previous space.

Any reason this was omitted?
