Why scrollbar not working right?

K

kevs

I notice that in word, If I click in scroll bar at top or bottom, page does
not jump to top or bottom as it would in finder. Any ideas why? Thanks.

What do you mean by "jump to top or bottom"? Clicking at either end of the
scroll bar is pretty much equivalent to a page up or page down (in both Word
2004 and Finder for me). Is that not happening for you?

Daiya:
Yes exactly.
No problem will all other apps.

But some word docs, this is not working.
I can send you a small sample file if you like. Don't know how else to
figure it out. Thanks!

Sorry, kevs. "Yes exactly" what? You click at one end of the scrollbar and
nothing happens? It moves an inch? It moves 7/8th of a page? It moves....?

You get the strange behavior--whatever in is--in some word documents but not
others? Are they all the same length? Are they all in the same view? Do
they all have the same zoom set?

Note that for short documents (and maybe most Finder windows), clicking at
one end of the scrollbar *will* take you all the way to the beginning or
end, because that's a screenful--while for long documents, it will only move
you a screenful.

With all other apps ,for example a 50 page web document, if I am at top of
page and click at bottom of scroll bar space it will jump to end.

In word, on a three page document it takes 4 clicks. Only app with this
problem. (100% view)

Hi kevs, I think that's the way it is designed to work. Clicking at the
bottom of the scroll bar is equivalent to a page down, or screenful down.
That's always been the behavior in all versions of Word, so far as I know.
I get the same behavior in TextEdit. I'm not sure you can change that.
There should be a key combo for "jump to end," maybe, as an alternative.

My same text in TextWrangler did jump to the end, but that's because
TextWrangler formats the text in such a way that there are only two vertical
screenfuls (and a whole lotta horizontal screenfuls). Clicking at the
horizontal end in TW only moved me a screenful, however, so that is
equivalent behavior.

Hey presto, it's called "EndofDocument." how logical. Tools | Customize,
Keyboard, select All Commands on left, look at alphabetical righthand
column, assign your preferred combo.

Wow that strange Daiya. Only word has this issue for me.
Ok so, I assigned "end" key to end of document -- instead of end of line,
which I never use. So much nicer than having to select both command & end.

But where is beginning of document??????
Did not see that offered!

Kevs -

Ain¹t so, I¹m afraid.

I¹m not sure what a 50 page web document would look like, but my expectation
when I click in a scroll bar is to move a page in either direction. I have
never had the display jump to the end, nor would I like that at all.

I have a feeling we may be talking past each other or I may have missed
something in your post.

Anyway, I think you can find the keyboard command and reassign it if you
want. Hope this helps a tad.

Best,

- Bill

Try the old trick of trying to assign the key combo you know the shortcut
uses.

When it tells you that you can¹t use it for the command you have tried to
assign it to, it will tell you where it IS assigned.

Finding commands in those lists can be extremely frustrating. You¹re not
alone.

I assume you know the key combo is Cmd-home?

Bill:
Thanks for reminding me of command home!
Now I don¹t think there is a way to make that just home without the command
is there?

I was able to do that for end of doc. (don¹t see a beginning of doc)

2 weird things now happening:

Now if finder windows, when I click on scrollbar and end doc, doc does not
jump to end. -- is this keyboard stuff systemwide or just for word?

And the new end keystroke is not working for new word documents.

In the wonderful world of the Tools | Customize dialog (so useful, yet so
annoying!), it is called StartOfDocument.

Ok:
Now all set with keystrokes for going to top and bottom page, but still:

Word is only app, where my mouseclicks at top/bottom of scroll bar does not
advance to top and bottom. (have it set to do this in general pref)

Had you mentioned a while back that there was a system pref for this--all
that discussion would probably have been shorter. No wonder Bill and I were
confused.

So the problem is that Word does not pay attention to the "scroll to here"
setting in the Appearance system prefs pane. Report it as a bug using Help
| Feedback. I assume system prefs are supposed to overrule app behavior,
anyhow.

Ok Daiya:
We are on same page.
Then I assume word should adhere to the "scroll to here"

Correct? Or anyone know otherwise??

Hi Kevs:

No. "Scroll to Here" was invented after Word was released (or at least,
after it was designed). Word has had a specific behaviour for a scrollbar
click for many years.

Put it in as a suggestion, by all means: but it's not a bug. The product
was never designed to do this.

Cheers
