Why sometimes separate windows, sometimes not?

I want to open two word documents in two windows so i can work with
them. Word won't do it on this home computer. It insists on opening
them in the same window (both accessible with windows menu command).
Having them in the same window is aggravating and limiting. At work,
same version of Word opens them in separate windows. I've scoured the
windows without help. Microsoft help is useless as usual.

Thanks for any help.

Which version of Word are you using? In Word 2000, 2002, 2003 & 2007 if you
open more than one file the file names should appear on the taskbar and you
can freely switch between them by clicking the name on the taskbar. If you
are using Word '97 or earlier, to have each file on the taskbar you would
need to open multiple instances of Word and then open the files within those
individual programs.

I know that you have said that the same version of Word is in both
locations, so it is obviously a setting.
Check this setting on the version that doesn't open the individual taskbar
items: Click Tools, Options, View tab. Click to turn on the Windows in
Taskbar check.

Let us know if this is what you are talking about or fixes your issue.

....and in Word 2007, the setting is here: Office button - Word Options -
Advanced tab - Display section - Show all windows in the Taskbar.

Thanks both of you. But this doesn't solve my problem. Imagine having
word and excel running. You will have one window for your word
document, one for your excel document. On one of my PCs, when I open
two word docs, there are in two separate windows like that. Maybe to
instances of the program but I don't think MS lets you do that.

On my other computer, there is only one Word window open, with
multiple files/windows within it. I want to know how to switch the
latter to the former, in MS Word 2003.

Thanks
Sarah

In Word 2002 or 2003, click on Tools | Options | View tab | check the
"Windows in Taskbar" box | OK.

In Word 2007, click on Office Button | Word Options | Advanced | check
the "Show all windows in the Taskbar" box | OK.
