Why such a delay to Insert a Picture from a File?

I ocassionaly import pictures into Word, but when the
explorer window appears to select the file path, it always
takes a few MINUTES before it allows me to change the
paths. It seems to be looking at all of my shares, which
may or may not be connected.

Any explanation for this and more importantly, how can I
speed this up?

Try
* turning off Inline AutoComplete in IE's Advanced Options
* removing any unused network connections found in Network Neighbouhood
