Why the flashing hourglass?

Recently had to reinstall Office 2003 on top of a clean install of XPpro. I
did all the updates etc. Now I find that when I start Outlook and begin to
read my email, the windows hourglass icon flashes on between a flashing
pointer. I've since REPAIRED and then REINSTALLED my Office app. Any
suggestions as to what is happening?
