Why Update Office Programs

R

rmilan

I am looking for a general reason(s) to why users would want or need to
update office? I found out my companys IS dept. never updates Office and
seldom Windows. Users would have to do the updates and most are not PC
literate.

My IS asked, why anyone would want to update office? There’s no reason or
benefit to this. It's a very small and antiquated company.

Do you mean upgrade to a newer version, or obtain the security updates for
the programs and Windows?

Just the security updates, SP's, etc. And anything under the detect and
repair tab under Help.

Mainly users are W2k but there are still some 95, & 98. IS claims they never
update office programs. We will be staying on with 2000 for both OS and
Office. I just can't figure out why someone would NOT want to do the updates.

Thanks for your help!

Well for one thing there's this:

<quote>
Main Entry: ludd·ite
Pronunciation: ldt
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): -s
Usage: usually capitalized
Etymology: Ned Ludd + English -ite
: a member of a group of early 19th century English workmen
engaged in attempting to prevent the use of laborsaving
machinery by destroying it

Citation format for this entry:

"luddite." Webster's Third New International Dictionary,
Unabridged. Merriam-Webster, 2002.
http://unabridged.merriam-webster.com ( 6 Jan. 2005).
</quote>

On the other hand there is also the common folk wisdom (to
which I also subscribe) "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

non-broken things

If they don't run those updates, they are subject to being a victim of the
security holes that are being patched, among other things. And, that can
cause troubles with all computers on the network.

IS is way out of touch with reality.

Thanks for reaffirming my thoughts on the topic. Maybe this is why the co.
may be going out of business soon, hah?

Couldn't they (IS) do the updates, SP's to the server and then when each
user logs in they automatically launch the updates and apply to their pcs &
laptops?

So my next question is, if IS will not give me or the other DBA the 2k
install cd, can we use another (not the original), 2k disk just to reinstall
or repair our own pcs? The user in particular has been able to "Detect &
Repair" and has found via MS Office site that there are 4 or 5 SPs, patches
etc. that he needs, but it asks for the install disk once it begins the
download.

Thanks again, I am so glad there is a resource like this available.

Rachel ;)
