Why use tables and cells

Can someone give me a very simple explanation as to why tables and cells are
used? thank you

My quick answer would be that it makes it easier to align your text (or
whatever).

Each cell in a row will be in the same place, and so will the content
(unless you use align center or align right)

For data you need to present in columns & rows.

Once upon a time, tables were also used for structure/layout, which is now
accomplished with DIVS and CSS.
