Why when Outlook downloads e-mails do other apps grind to a halt?

Have Comcast for internet... lately when Outlook downloads a new e-mail, it
goes very slowly and other applications that are open stall or run very
slowly... why?

-your version of Outlook (Help-> About)
-type of mail account (POP3, IMAP, Exchange, HTTP, Outlook Connector,
Exchange, other...?)
-any errors in their exact wording as they are presented to you.

I have Outlook 2003 and mail account is POP3...

Have you applied Service Pack 3 and additional updates to Office 2003
already?

A common cause of this issue is having a virus scanner integrated with
Outlook. Uninstall-disable this integration and try again.
