Why will Powerpoint play only the sound of my compatible movies?

The movie clips play perfectly in Windows Media Player. In Powerpoint I can
insert and play the movies, but only the sound plays. The screen shows the
picture of the first movie frame until I press play. Then the picture
disappears and the screen is black while the sound plays. When the clip
ends, the picture from the first frame reappears.

Have you try to use control toolbox? - Microsoft NetShow Player.

Goto Tools, Customize, Visual Basic, click the tools with the hammer.
You will have another toolboxes, Control Toolboxes, click . . . .

Browse down you will see Microsoft NetShow Player place the object on
the slide select it right click go to properties put your movie. Hope this
helps.

this player is not automatically installed on every computer. And if I try
to find a download page, I'm redirected to Windows Media Player, so it seams
to be part of that product, meanwhile.

How long is the path length of your files? It should not be more than 128
characters. Try moving your presentation and your video file to a folder
with a shorter path, e.g. test it on the desktop. Both files should be in
the same folder, if not, re-insert the video.

If that doesn't help, come back and give us the following information: Which
PowerPoint version do you use? Which file format is the video? How big is
it?
