Why will the check for updates in the office update web site lock.

Everytime I click on check for updates on the office web site it will stop
when the site is at 30% complete. Nothing happens after that. I checked my
security settings and I am using all the default settings recommended by
microsoft. I am able to manually download updates. Does anyone have a
solution.

My concern with using this Exe program is that I can NOT fine it on the
Microsoft web site anywhere. When I double click the hyperlink it
automatically wants to download the program. It does not take me to the
microsoft download web site first. My concern is infecting my computer. How
can I verify it is a microsoft download?

Note that it is part of Internet Explorer v6.
