Why won't docs open?

I had a hard drive failure, replaced the drive, reinstalled Windows XP and
Word 2003. Problem: when I click on a Word document to open it:
1) Windows installer box opens saying "preparing to install"
2) Microsoft Office Word box opens saying "The command cannot be performed
because a dialog box is open. Click OK, and then close open dialog boxes to
continue."
3) When I click OK, the Installer and the Microsoft Office Word box both
close and the document finally opens. However, this happens every time I try
to open a document. Also:
4) In "My Documents" when I click "File...New" there is no option to create
a new Microsoft Word document.
It's getting time consuming to go through this series of steps every time I
want to open, edit or create a Microsoft Word document. I've tried repairing
my installation using the Microsoft Word 2003 disk, but the problem persists.
What's wrong and how can I fix it? Thanks.

Thanks, but in fact there is only one account on the computer -- the
administrator account, which is mine. So I was logged in as administrator.
How can I fix the problem though?

I just typed 'Windows installer cleanup utility' into Google and it was the
very first hit.

Microsoft's search engine(s) are crap: Google is your friend!
