Why won't my DVD play?

It seems I've lost the ability to play a DVD in my computer. I'm using
Windows ME and have InterVideo's Win DVD 2000 on my system. At one time I
could play a DVD, but now something seems to have happened. WinDVD boots up
and I can see the DVD when I check my "D:" drive. But the DVD never begins
to play - on its own or when I press the "play" button. I can't seem to get
it to play on Media Player either (unless I'm doing something wrong there).
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to play a DVD on my computer?

The first thing I would do is ask in a Win ME or multimedia group as
the question does not appear to be one for MS Office,
