Why won't Outlook 2007 retrieve my email???

I upgraded my Office XP to Ultimate Office 2007 the other day. Before
installing the new software, my Outlook worked just fine. Once I installed
the 2007 version, however, I could no longer retrieve my email from Verizon's
server. I must have checked and re-typed the settings into the account
manager a hundred times by now. They're exactly the same as they ever were,
and they work just fine in my Outlook Express. There are no problems with my
ISP. I keep getting an error message saying that I need to check my email
address and password because they're being rejected, and there's another
error (-ERR Missing Argument) that I don't understand at all.

I've disabled my firewall and my antivirus software. That made no
difference. I tried to set up another account. No good. I opened Outlook
in Safe Mode and tried it. Still nothing. I tried a couple of things that a
Microsoft support person emailed to me, all to no avail. And now he won't
write back to me since I wrote that we need to try something else. I really
can't afford to bring someone over to my house to fix this, and I don't feel
like I should HAVE to! Can anyone PLEEEEASE help me??? I spent a bunch of
money on this software and I'm pretty ticked that I can't even use it!

You've run Detect/Repair?
If so;
Try creating a new Profile (mail applet in control panel) - do not copy old
profile, add a *new* data file & your accounts. (ensure you have the account
settings to hand) Test the accounts.
If thats all OK then you can go about adding your old data file to *copy*
data from this to your new data file

Thank you for replying! Unfortunately, this didn't fix the problem either.
I even tried to do this with a different email account (I attempted to import
my Gmail account). For some reason, Outlook can't perform the automatic
detection of the email provider's server.

Oh, and yes, I tried to run the Detect/Repair tool yesterday - the computer
got hung up three-quarters of the way through and had to end the application
before it was complete.

So my husband suggested that we try to uninstall-reboot-reinstall the Office
software. Now my whole computer seems to have gone kaput. *bangs head
against wall* It's been hanging with the hourglass for the last fifteen
minutes, after having to reboot three times, the final time in Safe Mode...

We're considering just buying a new computer. This thing is about four
years old and it's been nothing but trouble for the last two.

uninstall / reinstall will not fix anything detect and repair won't fix...
its essentially the same but detect and repair is faster.

You upgraded from outlook 2003 to outlook 2007? You probably needed to
deleted the 4 files listed at
http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/ol2007/slow.htm and make a totally new
Outlook profile, using a new name (not delete the old one, make a new one
using the old name). After you make a new profle, go to the start menu, run
command and type
outlook.exe /safe

It's possible the old computer is too slow for office 2007 - while it should
run, everything may take a lot longer than expected. But unless there are
other problems, it will run (well, maybe walk :))

Thanks for your help, Diane. I'm sorry to report that I'm still unable to
connect to the email server through OL 2007. It's rejecting my login
information, consistently. My husband took over the computer tweaking, as I
am getting frustrated to the point of being nonfunctional (also, he works
with computers for a living). He created a brand new profile for me. It
didn't work. He deleted the files you mentioned (the ones that were there,
anyway - some weren't). That made no difference, either. It's as if Outlook
is warping my login info somehow, even though it appears to be correct. It
won't let me access my Verizon or my Gmail accounts. Again, OLE still works
fine and there's no problem with the webmail for either account. I'm
starting to think that the software just doesn't like me.

Hello again! I'm wondering if this has any relevance to the problem at
hand...? Every time I go to check my email settings, I see that my network
password hasn't been saved, in spite of my checking the "Save to password
list" box. Could it be that my Password list is all screwy, thus interfering
with my mail transfer?

I think its not getting saved because its being rejected, but you can delete
a folder that stores passwords and let windows regenerate it.

are you using a firewall? it may be blocking the new outlook.exe version #.
its not really the correct symptoms for a firewall blocking it, but its
worth looking into.

Add yourself to the safe senders list and all should be fine. I had the exact issue as you, and this solved it immediately and permanently. Good luck.

Highlight any email that you had sent to yourself (or anyone else)
Go to Actions...Junk E-mail... Add Sender to Safe Senders List

Then any SPAMmer that uses your address as the sending address (quite
common) can reach you.
