why won't Outlook remember my email password

I have just set up Outlook Express on my XP Home computer
after losing my hard drive. Previously (i.e. on my old
hard drive) Outlook remembered my email password just
fine. Now, it will not remember it even though
the "Remember Password" checkbox is set to true.

One difference I noticed is that the "Rememeber Password"
checkbox is checked but disabled (i.e. I cannot turn it
on or off). This happens when I first open Outlook and
the popup dialog asks once again for my password.

I have tried to set the password using
Tools/Accounts/Mail/Properties but it does not have any
effect either. I can type the password, but as soon as I
close the dialog and reopen it the password is gone.

Does anyone know how I can fix this bug?
