Why?

On a post on page 3, I read this-

one of my web-savvy friends encouraged me to use
as few characters as possible, without spaces, to name FP files;

Why is this important? Do I need to remane my files? Since I published I
realized I had a space in a title of one file, so I renamed it. My index
page I renamed to index.html, because when I used the hosts submit to search
engines, the example said to put www.yourname.com/index.html. Since doing
this, when I republish it says I don't have these 2 pages in my site, but
they are on my destination server.

Was I wrong to rename index page? Do I need to shorten my file names?

Thanks for any help!

Only concern yourself with files that have spaces in the file names.
Spaces break links in some browsers.
As for index.htm or index.html it needs to be what the server "needs" for the default
document.
( Home page )
When you publish, it will be automatically changed to what the server needs.
However, the un-needed file, if there is one, needs to be removed from the server.
