Does Microsoft Excel 2003 have a function which computes the value of a
variable involved in generating a desired solution? In other words, if one
needs for the solution of a formula in a cell to be a certain value, and that
cell equals the sum of others which contain a common variable, can (or will)
Excel compute what the value of the variable needs to be in order to create
the desired solution? For example, if another cell has been assigned the
name of VAR, and if cell A1 contains =VAR*1, cell B1 contains =VAR*2, and
cell C1 contains VAR*3, and if cell D1 is intended to produce the result of
=SUM(A1:C1), is a function available which allows one to input the value of a
desired solution of D1 which then calculates (and perhaps inputs) what the
value of the VAR cell must be in order to produce the desired solution?
To explain further, if the cell with the name of VAR is 3, in the above
example, cell A1 returns the value of 3, B1 returns 6, C1 returns 9, and D1
returns 18. Is a function available such that, if it is desired for the
solution (or calculation) of cell D1 to result in 24, Excel computes that the
cell named VAR must be 4? Or if the desired solution for D1 is 9, can Excel
compute that the cell named VAR must have a value of 1.5?
I am almost certain that I have been previously aware of such an Excel
function which finds required variables in order to generate desired
solutions, but now I cannot remember what the function is named or how it is
used. Please help me determine if I am mistaken about the existence of such
an Excel function or if, in fact, such a function exists. Thanks for any
answers!
