will not load word 2002 docs to office 2007

i just loaded windows 7 and my word-2002 would not work. so i got myself
office 2007. now the old doc files will not open with an error file not
available. i use bit defender for anti virus (no norton on the system). i
tried everything i could think of and microsoft doesn't speak english. can
anyone help me i must gain access to these files.
