This should call the "Open Dialog Box". it errors out on strFilter=

no just whats here. I did not see the "Excel" in that part of the code. Can I
just list the Excel call?

D

Copy all of the code in the shaded box (between Code Start and Code End)
into a new module, and save it with a unique name (say, mdlCommonDialog).

Then your code will work.

Unless you copy that code, it will not work.

Doug,
I have not used this API before, I just set the path name. With this Db, I
have a Form, and I want the users to be able to click and have the Open
Dialog Box to prompt them for file location.
I copied the complete code, but I get an error right after this next lines
stating “only comments can appearâ€â€¦â€¦ These will be Excel files only. I just
don’t know what I am doing wrong.

It sounds as though you might have copied too much (only copy what's in the
shaded area), or else you didn't copy it into a new module. Make sure it's
an actual module, as opposed to a Class Module.

T

tmaxwell

Doug,
I have been using the Get External Data (Excel spreadsheet) then converting
it to a table, then run the Find Duplicates Query. The code you told me to
copy does work, but does not bring up the file for me to convert to a table.
I am like DOEY!

D

Douglas J. Steele

I have no idea what you mean by "bring up the file for me to convert to a
table". All that code does is return the full path to the file. You have to
take that full path and do something with it.

T

tmaxwell

Doug,
Once I got it to return the full path, it allows me to pick the file, once
I do, nothing happens. I just not sure I am going about this the right way.
As I stated, I was using the create new table, and on the file menu I was
using the "Get External Data" choosing the Excell file, then converting the
Excel file to a table. Then I ran the New query "Find duplicate records" Qry.
I need to put this on a from page for the users to be able to do on there
own.

D

Douglas J. Steele

What are you expecting to happen?

Remember that my dealings have been in this thread. If you've posted other
code that you've used in other threads, I don't know about it. Nowhere in
this thread has you stated anything about creating new tables, etc.

T

tmaxwell

Doug,
This DB is for finding duplicates in various Excel Reports. I was using the
create new table, and on the file menu I was using the "Get External Data"
choosing the Excell file, then converting the Excel file to a table. Then I
ran the New query "Find duplicate records" Qry.

I need to put this on a from page for the users to be able to do on there
own.

Sorry about that, I thought I had posted the exact question.

T

tmaxwell

Here is the code, I built a form page and used a command button, and I set
the API code inside the Private sub function. I am not used to building such
difficult forms.
I want the users to be able to click the button, be prompted to choose file
(excel) these will be different excel files every time. Side note, as I
stated, right now I use the new table, go to file menu, Get External Data, I
pick the Excel file I need, then I create a table.
Then I run the new query, Find Duplicates. I can write the query for the
Dups. I am having real problems with the Form page. It seems no matter where
I put the API it bring up the vb code instead of the prompt window.

Ken's code doesn't get copied into your own routine. Go back to
http://www.mvps.org/access/api/api0001.htm , recopy all of the shaded code
and copy it into a brand new module. Save that module, making sure you don't
name it the same of any of the routines within it.

Once you've done that, inside your Private Sub Get_Data_Click() routine
you'd use code similar to the sample lines at the very beginning of that
page.

T

tmaxwell

Sorry, here is where it fails. Should I be using just a portion of the API?

Declare Function aht_apiGetOpenFileName Lib "comdlg32.dll" _
Alias "GetOpenFileNameA" (OFN As tagOPENFILENAME) As Boolean

T

tmaxwell

Doug,
I am not trying to test your patience. I copied the code, put it in a
module, then in the get_data() I inserted the first part of the code at the
top of the page.
I really am trying to understand the API and which parts to use.

Once I put the code in the module, and then copied the code for
Private Sub Get_Data_Click() it does open a prompt window ask for the file
name, I choose the file, click open, but the file does not open.

Private Sub Get_Data_Click()
Dim strFilter As String
Dim strInputFileName As String

strFilter = ahtAddFilterItem(strFilter, "Excel Files (*.XLS)", "*.XLS")
strInputFileName = ahtCommonFileOpenSave( _
Filter:=strFilter, OpenFile:=True, _
DialogTitle:="Please select an input file...", _
Flags:=ahtOFN_HIDEREADONLY)
End Sub

D

Douglas J. Steele

Okay, in Get_Date_Click, once the dialog has closed, strInputFileName
contains the full path to the file the user has selected.

Use that variable for the rest of what you're trying to do.

T

tmaxwell

Doug,
I just want to see if I am explaining this correctly. I open Access, under
Objects I choose "Tables", then I click on "NEW", a New Table window opens
and I choose "Import Table". A window "Import" open, then I go to the drive
and choose the file, then a window "Import Spreadsheet Wizard" opens. I
choose the worksheet I want, then it ask if "first row contains Column
Headings. From there I click through and then name the table what ever the
file name is. From here I can write a dups query. Can this be put on a form?
