Will not shut down

I am having a problem with Word 2003 (from my Office 2003 cd) not shutting
down intermittingly. I 'suspect' it may be related to my recent installation
of XP SP3.

I reformatted my system recently, and reinstalled everything. My version of
XP used was pre-SP1. As a result of the recent release of XP SP3, I did not
to the normal update wherein SP1 or SP2 would have been detected, and
installed. Instead, I merely installed SP3 because MS site advises that SP3
has all previous updates, etc..

But now, in using Word 2003, whenever I have 2 or more files opened at the
same time, and go back & forth from one ... doing sut-n-paste procedures,
whenever I try to shut down, Word freezes up and will not. The only way I
can get it to shut down is to go to the processes activity screen
(Ctrl-Alt-Del) and deactivate it there ... short of simply forcibly turning
off the computer that is.

I have never had this problem before, and have used Word 2003 now for the
past few years. I have scanned the hard drive ... defragged it ... used
CrapCleaner to eliminate any trash ... have uninstalled and reinstalled, with
boot-up in the middle ... all with no success.

Any and all comments/suggestions welcomed. I 'think' it may be register
related, regarding a possible glitch with SP3; whenever SP1 or 2 have not
been installed.

This may sound a bit odd, but I'd try updating my video driver.

Do you have any add-ins installed in Word?

I'll check the HP site for any update ... but have been using Windows updates
to detect any hardware, etc. updates with no problem.

In meantime, you lose me regarding 'add-ins'. I have installed nothing to
Word, so can you clarify a bit please.

An add-in is something that increases functionality of the program. For
example, Adobe Acrobat Pro adds an add-in to Word, PowerPoint and Excel,
allowing users to create PDFs from a toolbar.

Try starting Word with no add-ins running. To do this, go to Start | Run and
type winword.exe /a and hit OK. If it then lets you do the cut and paste
without crashing, then probably an add-in is causing the issue.

Worth a try, anyway.

Well, nothing at HP website to update. In fact, the driver I have is
actually newer than what their support page reflects.

I don't have Adobe Pro ... merely the reader 'free' version. As for excell
etc, I did not install them due to only using the word module. Plus,
whenever I see a related 'update' for them on the MS site, I uncheck it to
prevent it being downloaded.

I tried what you suggested ... and no difference.
