Will Office 2003 delete Office 2000 programs?

I have Office 2000 Premium, which included Publisher, Microsoft PhotoDraw,
and other nice programs that I use regularly. I got Office 2003 Standard as a
gift, which doesn't include these. If I install Office 2003 (really only in
order to update Word 2000 to Word 2003), will I still be able to use Office
2000 Publisher, PhotoDraw, etc.? Thanks a million if anyone knows!

«Although we do not recommend it, you can install and use more than one
version of Microsoft Office on a single computer. For example, you can
install and use both Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Office 97 on the
same computer. This article describes the problems that you may experience
if you do this and offers advice to help prevent different versions of
Office from conflicting with each other. »

There are several articles. This is the one particular to Office 2003. If
you do not plan to have multiple versions of the same program, you will have
fewer problems.

If you install 2003, selecting the upgrade option it will replace 2000
components that are included in 2003 leaving the other 2000 components
intact (eg Publisher etc)

Yes if you Update. All other Off 2000 apps like Publisher and Photo Draw and etc
will stay in place

Huh ?? What does this answer that you posted above have to do with what the OP
asked. Wants ONLY to Upgrade his Office 2000 Word to Word 2003 only and leaving the
rest of the Office 2000 alone

My name is spelled "Earle". You really are an insistent moron. As for the
article, it contains numerous pitfalls that the OP should be aware of, even
if as he says he is not going to fall into any of them. Knowledge is power.

Peter, Earle, and DL - Thanks for your postings. Is it the case then that
during the installation of Office 2003 it will give you the option to
upgrade, and then you can choose only certain programs to upgrade and
install? I think this is what you're telling me, and just want to confirm
before I take disk in hand.

Thanks a million for this guidance! It's indispensable for an Office novice.

You will be given the option to upgrade the Office suite, not individual
components. That upgrade will only upgrade matching components.
If you were to elect to install only individual components, eg Word 2003
then that would install as a parallel installation, leaving Word2k in place

I found the following Microsoft article that gives information about Office
2003 that conflicts with the suggestion to use the Upgrade option:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826319/

The article claims:
"By default, your earlier versions of Office are automatically removed _if
you click Upgrade_ in the Type of Installation pane of the Microsoft Office
2003 Setup dialog box."

The article goes on to say:

"When you install Office [2003], Setup checks to see if any components from
earlier Office versions are installed on your computer. If Setup detects
these earlier components and you select any option *except* Upgrade in the
Type of Installation pane, Setup displays the Previous Version of Office
pane." ... "You can [then] selectively remove programs from earlier versions
of Office by selecting Remove only the following application(s), and then
selecting each program that you want to remove."

-- What do you Office gurus think in light of this? My conclusion is *not*
to click on Upgrade when installing Office 2003, but rather click on Custom
Installation. Do you agree?

DL - Why don't you agree? Do you know that the MS document I quoted from is
wrong? I don't want to lose PhotoDraw and Publisher from Office 2000 by
clicking Upgrade. If you've learned otherwise, please describe. Thanks.

Photo Draw and Publisher from Office 2000 will not be touched when you Upgrade with
Office 2003 Standard. Since Photo Draw and Publisher are not on your Office 2003
Standard they will not be touched

In one / several of the first replies it was clearly stated that the upgrade
option would only upgrade (And remove) components present in *both* versions
Any component not included in 2003 would remain untouched, ie Photodraw &
Publisher
You are complicating the issue, where no such complication exists.

BTW I seem to recollect that Photodraw could be problomatic, in Office2k, I
dont know whether this was as a result of haveing 2003 installed (I had this
type of instalation once)

PPS The actual MS advice for using multiple Office versions, or components,
is to install to version specific folders. In your specific case that would
involve uninstalling Office2k, rebooting, then reinstalling Office2k, via
custom installation to a version specific folder eg Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office2k
Then updating, and then installing Office2003 via the Upgrade option (no
need to custom install, as by default Office versions from Officexp install
by default to a version specific folder, \Office 11 in your case)
