Will office:mac 2004 support Unicode?

Hiho.

Is there any information about unicode-support in office:mac 2004? I
want to use the MacOS X typographical tools and functions in word:mac
for example ligatures like the fi-glyph, the ff-glyph and others.

What do you know?

Word 2004 (actually, the whole of Office 2004) will support Unicode to the
level that Mac OS X does.

Basically, that means anything you have glyphs in your fonts for, but no
right-to-left and limited double-byte support.

As for typesetting, just remember that Word is a word-processor. It is not
designed to do typesetting. It will get close, but it will never be as good
as a dedicated typesetting application, and there are no plans to add those
functions.

If you can notice the absence of ligatures in your text, I think you would
be better off buying a real typesetting application. Generally, the world
is moving away from such typographical devices. Their original purpose was
to enable more text to fit on the same area of paper, back when paper was a
substantial cost. These days, the use of ligatures is held to be poor page
design: it slows down readers, reduces readability, comprehension and
retentivity and serves no useful purpose. I would have sharp words with any
of my staff who started using ligatures :)

Hope this helps
